Things To Consider Before Buying A Running Treadmill

When shopping for running treadmills, one may become overwhelmed with all the choices available. However, if you have a game plan before you begin your search, you will be able to narrow your choices down considerably.

Walking or Running?

The first thing you need to determine is whether you are going to be using the treadmill for running or walking.

Walking

If you are looking for a treadmill to use primarily for walking, you can cross off most of the highly priced treadmills. A treadmill from any big box store should be more than sufficient if all you want to do is walk on your new treadmill. The price range for a treadmill used primarily for walking should not cost you more than $600.

Try to test the treadmill out before you buy it. This way you can determine if it is too noisy for your taste. Some treadmills can be very noisy and this can be quite annoying (especially for the other people in the house) if you are trying to watch television, listen to the radio or listen to your mp3 player while walking because the volume on the television, radio, or mp3 player will have to be very loud. Treadmills with DC motors are usually less noisy, as opposed to treadmills with AC motors.

Running Treadmills

If you are going to use your new treadmill for running, the options become more complicated. However, you can also narrow your search by answering the following questions:

1.      Are you going to be doing long, slow jogging?

2.      Are you going to be doing short, fast jogging?

Fast Running

High end treadmills that are found in most big fitness centers can be very expensive, however, most are very reliable and can handle high speeds and long usage rates. If you are going to be running fast but for shorter periods, you will need a treadmill that has good elasticity. This will help your knees and shins from becoming injured. Make sure the treadmill has an emergency shut-off! This way you can protect yourself from serious injury if you cannot keep up with the speed you have selected. The platform should be at least 60 inches for running. Also, look for treadmills that can reach speeds of at least 10 miles per hour. These treadmills can range anywhere from $1000-$3000, so do your shopping and look for a good deal.

Slow Running

When using a treadmill for long, slow jogging the speed can range from 5 miles per hour to about 7. 5 miles per hour. The deck does not have to as elastic as a treadmill used for faster running, however, good elasticity is always better on your joints. Again, the prices for these treadmills can range from $500 -$3000, so be smart and do not go pick a treadmill just because it is cheaper than the others, you may end up having to buy a replacement because of poor quality.

Other Options to Consider

1.      Heart rate monitors to determine how hard you are working.

2.      Incline adjustment allows you to adjust the incline of the treadmill for a more intense workout.

3.      The belt should accommodate your longest stride. That means the length of the belt should be no less than 48". Width should be no less than 17".

4.      The electronic board should show speed, incline, time, distance and calories burned. Other options can be found but they will usually come with a higher price tag.

5.      Try to get a treadmill that comes with a service package and warranty, this way you can have peace of mind should anything go wrong with your new treadmill.

Now you have a few things to consider before purchasing a new treadmill. Determine what your needs are and take your time when shopping. Pick out the treadmill that is right for you and get working on burning off those extra pounds.
